Sovereign-Star Racing hopes to ride wave of success to Chicago

Scotty Pollacheck is looking to continue posting competitive numbers again this weekend as the Sovereign-Star Racing team heads to Chicago, Ill.
Michael Ray is hoping to the ride momentum of his recent even win and No. 1 qualifying position as he competes at the Route 66 NHRA Nationals in Chicago, Ill.

AMERICUS, Ga. – The Sovereign-Star Racing Pro Stock Motorcycle team is looking to continue the momentum from their recent win at Englishtown, N.J., and their No. 1 qualifying position at the last race in Epping, N.H., as they compete this weekend at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway in Chicago, Ill.

The team’s racers, Michael Ray and Scotty Pollacheck, are both currently in the top five of the NHRA Mello Yello Series points standings at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively.

“I am really looking forward to continuing the learning and improving we did last weekend at Epping to help us go quicker and faster in Chicago. As a team, having gone to semifinals and finals at every race this season, we’re going to strive to continue the round-winning roll that we’re on,” Star Racing owner George Bryce said.

The Sovereign-Star Racing team took home their first Wally trophy of the year when Ray raced to his second career win earlier this month at the Englishtown event. Then, last weekend at Epping, he went on to qualify on the pole with his career best 6.832 ET at 197 mph, which also set the low ET and high mile per hour for the entire weekend.

“I’m a momentum rider. If I can get going on a streak and get comfortable, there’s not anybody out there who’s going to beat me on Sunday. I have the best bike in the world and the best crew in the world. I think we’re going to be a force to be reckoned with in Chicago and in Norwalk,” Ray said.

Fellow teammate Pollacheck is also hoping to continue posting competitive numbers this weekend in Chicago. Pollacheck qualified at No. 4 in Epping with the quickest pass of the round and also had the third quickest run during the first round of eliminations on Sunday. He is confident that the challenging back-to-back race schedule will help him to stay focused.

“I like the back-to-back races because it seems like you’re making more runs instead of feeling like you’re starting over again. When you get back at it right away everything is a lot fresher in your mind,” Pollacheck said.

Although the competition within the Pro Stock Motorcycle class has been extremely close this season, the Sovereign-Star Racing teammates know that they have the ability, the motorcycles and the crew that they need to win on Sunday.

“We can definitely see the improvements in how fast the bikes are. I think we’re on the right track because we’ve made some good strides in gaining horsepower recently. Now, I just have to go out there and do my thing,” Pollacheck said.

“We went low ET at Epping on Saturday, and then went really fast Sunday afternoon, too. So, after we were knocked out in the semifinals, we came back and checked the engine and said, ‘Oh, this thing looks great. Let’s load up and go to Chicago,’” Ray said.

The Sovereign-Star Racing teammates will compete this weekend June 28-30 at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway in Chicago, Ill. Television coverage on ESPN2 will begin with qualifying sessions airing from 6:30 – 8 p.m. Saturday, June 29 and final eliminations from 9 p.m. – 12 a.m. Sunday, June 30.
