What is the Star 30/30 M8 Cam? (And What Most Riders Get Wrong About It)

I've been building Harley engines for over 30 years. And if there's one question I get more than any other, it's some version of this:

"What cam should I get?"

Most of the time, the rider asking already has an opinion. They've read something on a forum, talked to somebody the track, or watched a YouTube video where a guy with a dyno made it sound more complicated than it needs to be.

Here's what I actually tell them...

Why Most Performance Cams Get This Wrong

The performance aftermarket has a horsepower problem. Everything gets marketed around peak numbers because peak numbers are easy to put on a box.

What those numbers don't tell you is where the power lives.

A cam that makes peak horsepower at 6,500 RPM on a heavy bagger is borderline useless on the street. You're never there. You don't want to be there. And chasing that number usually means giving up torque at the RPM range you actually use every single day.

I've seen riders put aggressive, high-RPM cams on touring bikes and then wonder why the bike feels lazy off the line and requires constant downshifting in traffic. The cam isn't broken. It's just wrong for that application.

What the Star 30/30 Cam Actually Does on the Street

When the 30/30 is installed and tuned correctly, here's what riders consistently report:

  • Stronger roll-on torque. The bike pulls harder from a roll without needing to wind it up first. That's the midrange torque doing its job.

  • Flatter power delivery. Instead of a narrow powerband that requires staying in a specific RPM window, the power comes in early and stays longer meaning fewer downshifts and less work for you as a rider.

  • Better throttle response. The engine feels more immediate — not twitchy, but connected. When you roll on, the engine responds which can give you better gas mileage. With a stock cam, you need more throttle (and more fuel) to get that response.

Expect to add 30+ horsepower when you bolt-on a Star 30/30 with proper tuning. Most people can't believe this and they would be wrong!

The Most Common Mistakes I See

  • Installing it without a proper tune. This is the single biggest mistake, and it's not close. A cam changes how the engine breathes. The fuel and spark timing need to match. Any Star Cam, 30/30 included, installed with a stock tune is leaving power on the table at best and running hot at worst. Every cam we sell needs to be tuned. That's not negotiable if you want it to perform at its best.

  • Expecting race results from a street cam. The 30/30 is a bolt-on street cam. It's designed to make your bike faster and more enjoyable everywhere you actually ride it with the least number of other upgrades as possible. If you're building a race engine, that's a different conversation and a different cam.

When the 30/30 Is NOT the Right Choice

I'd rather tell you this upfront than have you find out after the purchase.

If your bike has significant head work, high compression, and supporting mods already in place — the 30/30 may be undersized for what you've built. You've created an engine that can support more aggressive cam timing, and a street-oriented cam won't take full advantage of it. Instead, I’d suggest you explore our Star F35A M8 Cam.

And if your engine has underlying mechanical issues, a cam swap isn't the fix. Address the foundation first and then look at installing a cam to fit your riding profile.

So, Who It's Actually Right For

The 30/30 is built for Harley-Davidson M8 Gen 1 (2017-2023) riders on heavy street bikes — baggers, touring rigs, trikes, two-up riding — who want the bike to feel stronger everywhere without rebuilding the entire engine around the cam. It's right for you if this fits your riding style and how you enjoy your bike. (Note: if you have a M8 Gen 2 2024+, our M28 is designed specifically for you.)

The 30/30 works exceptionally well and is super dependable as part of a complete setup. The combination of the 30/30 with a quality compensator upgrade like our Star Billet Compensator is one of the most common builds we see for good reason: both components are addressing the same goal from different angles, and they complement each other in ways that show up immediately in how the bike rides. If that combination is relevant to your setup, we have a pre-made bundle offered at a discount to get you rolling.

What the 30/30 Name Actually Means

It started when Jackie and I were young and we were into small block Chevys. The best cam that you could put in a 327 or 350 was the Zora Arkus-Duntov 30-30 and you could only buy it at the Chevrolet store.

So, who was Zora Arcus Duntov? He was the race engineer at General Motors, and he was in charge of the racing Corvettes. He’s the godfather of the 30-30, and that’s how we came up with the name. It’s a cool name and means a lot to us but that’s it. That’s as far as it goes.

George Bryce "meeting" Zora - the Godfather of the 30-30 cam at the Corvette museum.

The Bottom Line

Our Star 30/30 M8 cam makes your Harley faster and stronger where you actually ride it — on the street, in real conditions, at the RPM range your bike actually lives in every day. Of course, it makes great horsepower, is impressive on the dyno, and sounds like a beast, too!

A stock 117 M8 engine vs. a 117 with our Star Racing 30/30 cam and D&D exhaust swap!

That's what it was designed to do. And after thousands of builds, it's arguably one of the best decisions a street rider can make.
