Why Your Harley Has Excessive Valve Train Noise

Valve train noise on a Harley is one of those things that riders either dismiss too quickly or panic about unnecessarily.
The truth is somewhere in the middle — and knowing the difference between normal mechanical sound and something worth addressing can save you real money and a lot of unnecessary worry.
Here's what's actually going on when your valve train is louder than it should be.
First: What "Normal" Sounds Like
Milwaukee-Eight and Twin Cam engines are not quiet by design. They're pushrod-operated V-twins with significant mechanical character. Some valve train noise is normal, expected, and not a problem.
What you're listening for is change. A bike that's always had a certain sound profile isn't a concern. A bike that's developed a new noise — or an existing noise that's gotten noticeably worse — is telling you something.
That distinction matters before you start pulling covers.
The Most Common Causes of Harley Valve Train Noise
1. Lifter Wear or Failure
This is the most frequent culprit on both M8 and Twin Cam engines.
Hydraulic lifters (or also known as tappets) maintain valve train clearance automatically using oil pressure. When they wear, stick, or begin to fail, they lose the ability to maintain proper clearance — and that loss of clearance produces noise. The sound is typically a ticking or tapping that's most pronounced at idle and low RPM and may quiet down as oil pressure builds and the engine warms.
On Milwaukee-Eight engines, lifter issues show up earlier and more frequently than most riders expect due to the more aggressive camshaft design on M8s.
On Twin Cam engines, the failure mode is similar but tends to progress more slowly. The sound profile is often the same — ticking at idle — but the timeline to serious wear is generally longer.
2. Pushrod Issues
Pushrods transfer motion from the lifters to the rocker arms. If a pushrod is bent, has worn ends, or is improperly adjusted, it produces noise in the valve train that can be difficult to isolate without pulling the engine down far enough to inspect. This is why it is critical to have robust, strong pushrods like our Star Racing M8 Adjustable Pushrods. Other adjustable pushrods on the market just don't hold up.
Pushrod issues are less common than lifter issues but worth ruling out — especially if the noise seems isolated to one cylinder or one side of the engine.
3. Rocker Arm Wear
Rocker arms pivot on a shaft and transfer pushrod motion to the valves. Worn rocker arm shafts or rocker arm bearings produce a noise that's easy to mistake for lifter noise — a ticking or knocking that varies with RPM.
On high-mileage engines this is more common, and it's worth inspecting if lifters and pushrods have already been ruled out.
4. Valve Clearance
Hydraulic valve trains are self-adjusting in theory, but in practice clearances can drift — particularly on engines with significant miles, after a cam swap, or if the wrong oil viscosity has been run for an extended period.
Incorrect valve clearance is one of the easier things to check and one of the first things worth verifying before assuming a more serious internal problem.
5. Oil Pressure and Viscosity
Hydraulic lifters depend on oil pressure to function correctly. Low oil pressure — from a worn oil pump, incorrect viscosity, or an oil level issue — starves the lifters and produces noise. This is worth ruling out early because it's a cheap diagnosis and because low oil pressure has implications beyond just valve train noise.
If the noise is accompanied by a low oil pressure warning or the bike has been run with the wrong oil weight for the climate and conditions, start here for sure!
M8 vs Twin Cam — What's Different
On Milwaukee-Eight engines, lifter and lifter guide issues are the dominant cause of valve train noise in our experience. The M8's lifter design has known sensitivity to oil quality, service intervals, and mileage. If you have an M8 making valve train noise, the lifters and guides are where the diagnosis should start.
On Twin Cam engines, the failure pattern is more distributed. Rocker arm wear and pushrod issues show up more frequently relative to M8s, and the progression from early noise to serious wear tends to be slower. That said, ignoring it still leads to the same place eventually.
What NOT to Do
Don't assume it's normal and keep riding. Some noise is normal. New noise, or worsening noise, is not. The components producing that noise are wearing — and the longer they wear, the more expensive the repair.
Don't immediately assume the worst. Valve train noise has a range of causes, most of which are addressable without a complete engine rebuild. Diagnosis before disassembly is always the right sequence.
Don't change the oil weight without understanding why. Heavier oil is sometimes recommended as a quick fix for lifter noise. It can temporarily mask symptoms — but it doesn't address the underlying root cause of the wear and can create new or worse problems in other parts of the engine. It's a band-aid, not a solution.
The Diagnostic Sequence
If your Harley is producing valve train noise that wasn't there before or has gotten worse, here's a reasonable order of operations:
Listen carefully — cold start versus warm, idle versus higher RPM, which side of the engine
Check oil level and pressure; verify valve clearance — rule out the simple stuff first
If the noise persists and is getting worse, it's time to pull covers and inspect lifters and guides. On M8 engines specifically, don't wait too long on this step — lifter issues that are caught early are a straightforward repair. Lifter issues that are ignored become cam lobe and bearing issues.
Check for rocker arm wear, especially if you have higher mileage.
If using adjustable pushrods, confirm correct installation.
Where This Leads
Valve train noise that traces back to lifters or lifter guides puts you at a decision point: address the worn components and put the engine back as it was, or address them as part of a broader performance build. If the engine is already coming apart for lifter work, that's the logical moment to evaluate a cam upgrade. The labor overlap is significant, and it's a cleaner approach than doing the work twice.
