The compensator is one of the most overlooked components on your bike. The factory compensator serves as the primary shock absorber between your crankshaft and drivetrain — shielding your flywheel assembly, primary chain, chain adjuster, clutch basket, and transmission from the constant torsional stress generated at low speeds, idle, and part-throttle operation.
 
Twin Cam stock compensators are much better than the M8 version in that they do not suddenly fail without notice. Instead, they constantly wear over time. It's common knowledge to change oil every few thousand miles. Well, the Twin Cam compensator is no different - it is generally worn to the point of needing replaced at around 20k - 25k miles.
